HSPVA Madrigal Singers become first ensemble from HISD to be named "Madrigal Festival Honor Choir"

The Madrigal Singers from The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) won the coveted title of Madrigal Festival Honor Choir. Established in 1972, the San Antonio Madrigal & Chamber Choir Festival has become the most prestigious choral contest in Texas. High-school ensembles who enter this competition are considered among the finest in the nation. On Saturday, March 5, HSPVA competed with 41 choirs from across the state and were selected as the winner of the 2016 Madrigal and Chamber Choir Festival. The 2016-2017 Madrigal Singers will return to the festival next year to proudly represent HISD in concert as the 2017 Honor Choir. HSPVA Director of Choral Studies, Mr. Shannon Carter, credits the win to a true team effort. “Each of the student performers along with Ms. Julia Hall, Director of Vocal Studies, and Ms. Pat Bonner, Chair of the Vocal Music Department, worked exceptionally hard to achieve a common goal that we set in August, to present a program of the highest possible artistic standard.

  • Because "Motown the Musical" is in town and two Houstonians are in the show in prominent roles, the city of Houston and the mayor recognized the Houstonians -- two HSPVA Vocal Music Dept. alumni:
Ashley Tamar Davis - class of 1998
Jarvis M. Manning, Jr. - class of 2005

At the city council meeting, July 21, 2015 was declared Ashley Tamar Davis Day and Jarvis B. Manning, Jr. Day in Houston. Both were presented with written Proclamations. Parents and friends were in attendance.

The show is an absolute smashing display of 60s, 70s and 80s music and dance and the audience was not shy about singing along on those familiar songs.
